Case Description

In the Kursk region, no later than August 2024, during hostilities, Ukrainian citizens, soldiers of the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Sergey Safronov, Yaroslav Mazur, Dmitry Ogaranko, and Kirill Komarov, were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. Criminal charges were brought against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, in August 2024, Ogarenko, Komarov, Safronov and Mazur, as part of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on armored personnel carriers, illegally invaded the territory of the Sudzhansky and Belovsky districts of the Kursk region. Ogarenko and Komarov advanced to the villages of Giry and Kamyshnoye to block them. Safronov and Mazur headed to the village of Spalnoe. While on Russian territory, the military personnel "equipped observation and fire positions, mined roads, opened fire on Russian military personnel and local residents, as well as intimidated civilians and hindered their evacuation." "On April 22, 2025, the 2nd Western Military Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Sergey Safronov and Dmitry Ogaranko to 15 years of imprisonment each, and Yaroslav Mazur and Kirill Komarov to 16 years of imprisonment." "For the first 3 years they must serve in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence - in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
