Case Description
On March 2, 2022, in the village of Kozarovichi, Vyshgorod district, Kyiv region, Ukraine, Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Khilyuk of the UNIAN news agency was abducted from his home. According to the testimony of his father, Vasily Khiluk, five Russian soldiers with automatic weapons surrounded their yard, put them on the ground, searched them, then tied their hands, covered their eyes, and led them somewhere. Then they were separated, Dmitry was taken further, and Vasily was locked in a basement, where he was held for ten days, after which he was released. It is known that in May 2023, Khilyuk was taken from the pre-trial detention center No. 2 in the city of Novozybkov, Bryansk region, and placed in one of the colonies in the Vladimir region. According to human rights defenders, he is currently either in IK-7 colony near Kovrov or in IK-6 in Melekhovo, where he is being held without any charges being brought against him, as a civilian hostage. On August 24, 2025, the Ukrainian was released as a result of another exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
