Case Description
Dmitry Ivanov, the author of the Telegram channel 'Protest MSU,' was accused of spreading knowingly false information about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Dmitry Ivanov is a student at the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics of Moscow State University, a civil activist who covered protest actions in his channel, and conducted live broadcasts from the courts of political activists. Ivanov also collaborated with the human rights movement "For Human Rights, and was one of the initiators of actions in support of the defendants in the "New Greatness" and "Network" cases. According to the investigation and the court, the posts and reposts in "Protest MSU" contained "deliberately false" information about the killings of civilians in Bucha and Irpin and the attack on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, as the data differed from the official reports of the Ministry of Defense. Ivanov was detained in early June 2022 and sent to a pre-trial detention center. On March 7, 2023, Judge Daria Pugacheva of the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow sentenced Ivanov to 8.5 years in prison. December 19 Moscow City Court upheld the sentence.
