Case Description
In Moscow in March 2022, the Main Investigative Directorate of the Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case against Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Gordon. According to the security forces' version, Gordon, during a live broadcast on a Ukrainian television channel, called for an armed attack on the Russian Federation and the unleashing of an aggressive war against it using nuclear weapons. In addition, he publicly called for the destruction of citizens of the Russian Federation on the basis of nationality, language and origin. At the same time, he also spread knowingly false information about bombings and artillery shelling of civilian infrastructure and peaceful citizens by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, presenting it as reliable reports. Subsequently, he posted a video recording of his speech on his public channel on the YouTube video hosting service. A criminal case was opened against Gordon on charges of public calls for unleashing aggressive war, inciting hatred or enmity on the basis of nationality and "fakes" about the Russian army. On July 19, 2022, Dmitry Gordon was put on the international wanted list, and the Basmanny District Court of Moscow issued a ruling on his in absentia arrest. On July 1, 2024, the 2nd Western Military District Court found him guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 14 years in prison.
