Case Description
In annexed Crimea, a criminal case was opened for calls to extremism and justification of terrorism against Dmitry Fomin, a native of Ukraine. The exact date of detention and the measure of restraint are unknown. According to the investigation, Fomin published a text on social media containing a call for violence against representatives of a particular ethnic group. Moreover, on his page he posted a publication justifying the activities of the Ukrainian paramilitary organization 'Legion "Freedom of Russia",' which is banned in Russia. On December 25, 2023, the Southern District Military Court found Dmitry Fomin guilty and sentenced him to 1 year of compulsory labor with a 10% deduction of his wages to the state. Moreover, he was fined 350 thousand rubles and deprived of the right to engage in activities related to website administration for a period of 3 years. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. In April 2024, a search was conducted in the occupied Crimea in Alushta at the home of a local 53-year-old resident Dmitry Fomin. He was accused of public actions expressing clear disrespect to society and committed with the intent to offend the religious feelings of believers. Equipment was seized from the defendant. The reason for the criminal prosecution was photographs of Orthodox shrines that the man published on his personal page on VKontakte in a popular social network, and which "he accompanied with unacceptable captions that offended the religious feelings of believers." During the investigation, Fomin was placed under a written undertaking not to leave. On August 5, 2024, the magistrate of the 23rd court district of the Alushta Judicial District of the Republic of Crimea found Dmitry Fomin guilty and sentenced him to a fine of 50 thousand. rubles. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
