Case Description
In the occupied part of the Luhansk region, no later than July 2024, a 47-year-old Ukrainian citizen, a serviceman of the 'Aidar' regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Denis Dem'yanchenko, was captured by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for participating in the activities of a terrorist organization and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was his service in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the nationalist Aidar battalion, which is recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. According to the Russian investigation, in June 2024, Demianenko, being in the Chernihiv region, voluntarily joined the ranks of the "Aidar" battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, underwent training at a military range, after which, performing the duties of a rifleman, he took part in hostilities against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics. September 11, 2025, the Southern Military Court found Denis Dem'yanchenko guilty and sentenced him to 19 years in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
