In the village of Avdiivka, Pokrovsk district, Donetsk region of Ukraine, no later than May 10, 2024, 23-year-old Ukrainian citizen, military serviceman of the "Azov" regiment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Danila Podushko was captured. Subsequently, a criminal case was initiated against him for "participation in the activities of a terrorist organization" and "training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities." According to the Russian investigation, in February 2023, Ukrainian citizen Podushko voluntarily joined the ranks of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade of the Ukrainian paramilitary nationalist association "Azov", recognized in the Russian Federation as a terrorist organization. From February to May 2023, he underwent training at training centers located in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland. Subsequently, Podushko applied the knowledge of close combat and weapons handling he had acquired during combat operations against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Lugansk People's Republic. On August 23, 2024, the Southern Military Court found Danila Podushko guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. On July 4, 2025, Danila Podushko was released during the next exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
