Case Description

In the occupied Mariupol, in May 2022, during the battles for 'Azovstal', Ukrainian citizens, servicemen of the 'Azov' regiment, 26-year-old Svyatoslav Zdorovenko, 24-year-old Vladislav Chuzh, and 27-year-old Bogdan Beznosko, were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. They were accused of cruel treatment of the civilian population, use of prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict, attempted murder and intentional damage to other people's property, motivated by political and ideological hatred and enmity. According to the Russian investigation, at the end of February 2022, Vladislav Chuzh, to whom Zdorovenko and Beznosko were subordinate, chose a firing position at school No. 32 in the city of Mariupol. During the period from March 1 to March 14, 2022, on his orders, they fired 20 mortar shells at two residential buildings. The purpose of the shelling was to intimidate the civilian population. As a result of the military's actions, houses were destroyed, no civilians were injured. On or before December 6, 2023, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Svyatoslav Zdorovenko, Vladislav Chuzhai, and Bogdan Beznosko guilty and sentenced each of them to 25 years in prison to be served in a strict regime penal colony. There is no information about appealing the verdict. On October 18, 2024, Vladislav Chuzh was released during the next exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine. Criminal cases were also opened against Bogdan Beznosko and Svyatoslav Zdorovenko for participating in a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the nationalist "Azov" battalion, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. According to the Russian investigation, Bezsnosko voluntarily joined the Azov regiment in November 2014. He underwent military training at a training base in Kyiv and, as a rifle-grenadier, participated in combat operations. On September 29, 2025, the Southern District Military Court found Bogdan Beznosko guilty and, by combining punishments, sentenced him to 28 years of imprisonment in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
