Case Description
On March 27, 2019, mass searches were carried out in annexed Crimea against 25 Crimean Tatar civil activists, most of whom are members of the Crimean Solidarity association. Most of the defendants in the case were detained on March 27, 2019; Osman Arifmemetov, Remzi Bekirov, and Vladlen Abdulqadyrov were detained on March 28, 2019, in Rostov-on-Don; Raim Ayvazov was detained on April 17, 2019, and Eskender Suleymanov on June 10, 2019.
The Crimean Tatars were charged with organizing the activities of a terrorist organization and participating in it (referring to the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization), as well as preparing to seize power by force.
According to the FSB, the defendants held secret meetings where they studied the ideology of Hizb ut-Tahrir, developed plans of activity, and engaged in propaganda and recruitment work among the population. The investigation considers Raim Ayvazov, Remzi Bekirov, Riza Izetov, and Shaban Umerov as the leaders of the cell, and the rest as participants. According to the lawyer, during Raim Ayvazov's detention, law enforcement officers tortured him. All defendants in the case pleaded not guilty and linked the persecution to their human rights and activist activities.
The Kievsky District Court of Simferopol chose pre-trial detention for all defendants.
On March 10, 2022, the Southern District Military Court found Raim Ayvazov, Farhod Bazarov, Remzi Bekirov, Riza Izetov, and Shaban Umerov guilty and sentenced Bekirov and Izetov to 19 years, Umerov to 18 years, and Ayvazov to 17 years (5 years in prison).
