Case Description
On May 10, 2025, in the Kursk region, 26-year-old Ukrainian citizen Artem Kovalyuk, a shooter from the 225th separate assault regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was taken prisoner by Russian soldiers. He was accused of committing a terrorist act that resulted in serious consequences, as part of a group of persons by prior conspiracy. According to the Russian investigation, on the night of May 8, 2025, Kovalchuk, armed with an AK-74 assault rifle with 240 rounds and two hand grenades, along with other servicemen, illegally crossed the Russian state border in the Glukhovsky district. He proceeded in the direction of the village of Novy Put with the aim of blocking and holding it. Together with his fellow servicemen, Kovalchuk held observation and fire positions, opposed Russian troops, took measures to disorganize the activities of government bodies, and intimidated the local population. Before the verdict, Artem Kovalchuk was held in custody. It is unknown when and which court chose a preventive measure. October 10, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Artem Kovalechuk guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in prison, with the first 4 years to be served in a prison, and the remainder in a strict regime correctional colony.
