Case Description
On May 17, 2022, in Mariupol, the occupied part of the Donetsk region, 33-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the Azov regiment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Arthur Tkachenko was captured by Russian military. A criminal case was opened against him for participating in a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the nationalist "Azov" battalion, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. According to the Russian investigation, on September 17, 2019, Tkachenko voluntarily joined the Azov regiment. From October to December 2019, he underwent training in a training camp. From September 17, 2019, to May 17, 2022, Tkachenko "performed combat duty, guarded objects controlled by the regiment, and maintained weapons and military equipment, thereby ensuring the activities of the terrorist community." On April 8, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found Arthur Tkachenko guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime penal colony. December 10, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
