Case Description
On February 14, 2019, following searches in the Krasnogvardeysky district of annexed Crimea, three local residents, Crimean Tatars Rustem Emiruseynov, Eskender Abdulganiyev, and Arsen Abkhairov, were detained. Emiruseynov was charged with organizing the activities of a terrorist organization, Abdulganiyev with participating in it, and Abkhairov with committing a terrorist act as part of a group of persons by prior conspiracy.
According to the investigation, no later than November 27, 2017, Rustem Emiruseynov created a cell of the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization in the Krasnogvardeysky district of Crimea, which was joined by Eskender Abdulganiyev and Arsen Abkhairov. They held meetings where they studied the ideology of the organization from special publications, discussed propaganda methods and secrecy measures, and also urged fellow villagers to join their meetings.
On February 15, 2019, the Kievsky District Court of Simferopol chose pre-trial detention for all three.
On November 3, 2020, the Southern District Military Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Rustem Emiruseynov to 17 years of imprisonment, and Eskender Abdulganiyev and Arsen Abkhairov to 12 years of imprisonment each in a maximum-security penal colony.
On November 1, 2021, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict without change.
