Case Description
In Omsk, since the beginning of October 2022, unknown persons began to set fire to cars with the symbol Z in support of the special operation. The police counted three such episodes - October 7, 12 and November 7. Gradually, investigators identified a suspect - it turned out to be a local 45-year-old engineer Anton Smolyaninov. He was put under surveillance. On December 29, 2022, the man allegedly set fire to a transformer booth on Voennaya Street, which supplied power to the tuberculosis dispensary and several dozen private houses. The building itself survived, but the fire damaged two cable lines. Smolyannikov was detained on the spot, and later, already at the investigators', the man confessed to arson of cars as well. He said that he set fire to cars because of his negative attitude towards the 'special operation'." Smolyannikov was charged with terrorism and on December 30 the court sent him to a pre-trial detention center. On December 27, 2023, the 1st Eastern Military District Court sentenced Anton Smolyaninov to 15 years in prison. For the first 5 years, Smolyaninov must spend in prison, and the rest of the term - in a strict regime colony. On August 13, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the sentence.
