Case Description

In Moscow on July 18, 2025, the Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case about "fakes" about the Russian army on political and ideological grounds against journalist Anna Mongayt. According to the investigation, Mongait published several posts on her Telegram channel dedicated to the bombing of Odessa. Furthermore, in January 2025, she wrote about a stream with Bishop Grigory Mikhnov-Vaytsekhovsky, positively assessing his attitude towards the war. In March, the journalist commented on possible negotiations between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, calling the latter's supporters 'faithful cannibals'. In May, she reacted to the announcement of Putin's speech with the phrase "How much longer can everything be blown up!" which the prosecution interpreted literally rather than figuratively. Mongait left Russia and lives in Europe. On August 25, 2025, the Presnensky District Court of Moscow placed the defendant in the case under house arrest in absentia. On October 2, 2025, the Presnensky District Court of Moscow found Anna Mongayt guilty and sentenced her in absentia to five years in a general regime colony. She was also prohibited from administering websites for three years.
