Case Description

1 March 2025, during hostilities in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region, Ukrainian citizens, soldiers of the 95th separate airborne assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, soldiers Nikolai Samsonov, Viktor Manita and Andrei Shevchuk, were taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. Criminal charges were brought against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, Samsonov, Manita, and Shevchuk, being soldiers of the Ukrainian 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade, illegally crossed the Russian border through the Sudzha checkpoint in February 2025. Armed with automatic weapons and grenades, they "participated in the blockade of the village of Malaya Loknya. As the prosecution claims, the goal of the defendants was to intimidate the local population and disrupt the work of government bodies. On October 7, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Viktor Manita to 16.5 years in prison, Nikolai Samsonov and Andrei Shevchuk to 16 years each, the first 4 years they must serve in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
