Case Description
On August 27, 2025, the Southern District Military Court found Andrey Barabnov guilty and, by combining sentences, sentenced him to 27 years of imprisonment to be served in a strict regime correctional colony. In Mariupol, an occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than April 2022, 26-year-old Ukrainian citizen, serviceman of the "Azov" regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andrey Baranov was taken prisoner by Russian military. A criminal case was opened against him for cruel treatment of the civilian population, the use of prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict, murder committed by an organized group, motivated by political and ideological hatred and enmity. Later, Barabanova was also accused of participating in the activities of a terrorist organization and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. According to the Russian investigation, in May 2021, Barabanov voluntarily joined the Azov regiment. In the village of Urzuf in the Mangush district, he underwent training, after which he participated in combat operations against the civilian population of the DNR and Russian servicemen as a grenade launcher. Between April 5 and 15, 2022, the personnel of 'Azov' were stationed at combat positions equipped in residential buildings and civilian infrastructure buildings in Mariupol. During the specified period of time, Baranov discovered an unarmed civilian man moving in the direction of the combat position he occupied, who did not pose a threat. Barabanov fired at least ten aimed shots from an AK-47 assault rifle at a civilian. The victim died at the scene from his injuries. No later than September 25, 2023, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Andrey Baranov guilty and sentenced him to 22 years in prison for murder. There is no information about appealing the verdict.
