On February 20, 2023, Saakyan received a fake Ukrainian passport from Gol'tvenko for leaving the territory of the 'DPR,' after which he retrieved a homemade explosive device from a cache to detonate vehicles of Russian military personnel in Mariupol, but was detained by FSB officers. Saakyan himself claims that, being a serviceman of the AFU, on March 28-29, 2022, he escorted a column of civilians during the evacuation.
