Case Description

No later than August 2023, a criminal case was initiated in occupied Mariupol against Ukrainian citizens, 28-year-old local resident Alyona Goltwenko and 30-year-old native of Vinnytsia region Alexander Saakyan. They were accused of committing three "terrorist acts" and "participation in a terrorist community. He was also accused of espionage and forgery of documents. According to the Russian investigation, in May 2022, an 'unidentified' employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine contacted Saakyan and offered him to join a 'terrorist community,' to which he agreed. From March to June 21, 2023, Saakyan conducted surveillance of the locations of the air defense systems of the RF Armed Forces and transmitted this data to an SBU employee. Saakyan involved Goltvanko in the terrorist community he created. It is claimed that the woman selected three cars with the letter 'Z' sticker and, with the approval of Saakyan and an employee of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, at different times in 2023, using a homemade incendiary device, set fire to the cars. On February 20, 2023, Saakyan received a fake Ukrainian passport from Gol'tvenko for leaving the territory of the 'DPR,' after which he retrieved a homemade explosive device from a cache to detonate vehicles of Russian military personnel in Mariupol, but was detained by FSB officers. Saakyan himself claims that, being a serviceman of the AFU, on March 28-29, 2022, he escorted a column of civilians during the evacuation. The guide made a mistake, the convoy 'turned' the wrong way, and they drove onto the positions of Russian troops, after which they were captured. On March 11, 2025, the Southern District Military Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Alena Goltenko to 18 years of imprisonment in a general regime colony, and Alexander Saakyan to 22 years of imprisonment and a fine of 550 thousand. rubles. For the first 3 years he must spend in prison, the rest of the time - in a strict regime colony. On June 17, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the verdict unchanged.
