Case Description
In the Kursk region on 20 November 2024, during hostilities, 49-year-old Ukrainian citizen Alexey Yashenko, a shooter of the 17th separate tank brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on the night of October 23, 2024, Yashchenko, armed with an AK-74 assault rifle, ammunition for it, and two F-1 hand grenades, together with other servicemen of his unit in a pickup-type vehicle, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation in the area of the checkpoint in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region, after which he proceeded on a BTR deep into its territory in order to block and hold individual settlements under armed control. Upon arriving at the village of Olgovka in the Korenevsky district, Yashchenko "united" with other servicemen from his unit, equipped and occupied an observation and fire position in a forest area near the village, monitored the actions of Russian servicemen, transmitted information about them, intimidated the civilian population with the use of weapons and prohibited evacuation. 16 July 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Alexey Yashenko guilty and sentenced him to 16 years imprisonment, with the first 3 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
