Case Description
In February 2019, a 40-year-old local resident, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Rocket Engines at MAI, Alexey Vorobyov, was detained in Moscow. He was accused of treason, illegal export of strategically important technologies and attempted smuggling of equipment that could be used in the creation of military equipment, weapons, as part of an organized group. According to the investigation, in November 2018, the man allegedly passed a scientific abstract of a liquid rocket engine's mathematical modeling to a representative of Harbin Polytechnic University, which was given to Elena Malkhova, an employee of the Voronezh "Design Bureau of Chemical Automation. It is claimed that photographs of this abstract, which had the "Secret" stamp, were found on Vorobyov's phone memory card. Using an examination, 'dust' was 'discovered' on the memory card, which 'predominantly occurs in the Chinese region'. On this basis, the investigation concluded that Vorobyov used the card on the territory of China, i.e. disclosed state secrets to a foreigner. On February 15, 2019, the defendant in the case was placed in custody at the request of the investigation. On 23 April 2021, the Moscow City Court found Alexei Vorobyov guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in a strict regime penal colony." September 8, 2021, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction upheld the verdict.
