Case Description
On July 13, 2023, local resident Alexey Volsky was detained in Nizhny Novgorod. A criminal case was opened against him for "fakes" about the Russian army. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a post on VKontakte with the words: "Many dead local residents and one devastation. In general, the Russian occupiers and the Russian government as a whole are to blame here. They are doing inhumane things." The FSB examination concluded that with this post, Volsky had spread knowingly false information about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. On July 14, 2023, the Moscow District Court of Nizhny Novgorod placed the man under house arrest. In September, the charges were toughened: the initial charge under the article on "fakes" under Part 1 of the article was reclassified to the dissemination of knowingly false information motivated by political hatred, and a charge of calls for extremism was also added. On October 3, Volsky was released under a written undertaking not to leave. On December 22, the court sent Alexey Volsky for compulsory psychiatric examination in a hospital. On May 14, 2024, Judge Sergey Glushkov of the Leninsky District Court of Nizhny Novgorod ruled to apply compulsory medical measures to Alexey Volsky. On July 31, 2024, the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Court upheld the appointment of compulsory medical measures for Volsky.
