Case Description
In occupied Mariupol on May 16, 2022, during hostilities at the Azovstal plant, 36-year-old local resident, Ukrainian citizen Alexey Maksimov was taken prisoner by Russian military. Subsequently, a criminal case was opened against Maximov on charges of "participation in a terrorist community" and "receiving training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. According to the Russian investigation, on May 2, 2018, he joined the "Azov" regiment, underwent training at a training camp in the village of Urzuf, and served as a locksmith until May 15, 2022. According to Maximov himself, he did not participate in combat missions and did not intersect with the main mass of special forces units. From 8 am to 5 pm, he was engaged in repairing vehicles, coming to work and leaving home. Not later than 26 October 2024, the Southern District Military Court found Aleksey Maksimov guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. On July 4, 2025, Alexei Maximov was released during the next exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
