Case Description
In the occupied Mariupol of the Donetsk region, no later than April 2022, 25-year-old Ukrainian citizen, serviceman of military unit 3057 of the Eastern Operational-Territorial Association of the National Guard of Ukraine, Azov" regiment, Aleksey Kyrkalov, was captured by Russian soldiers. He was accused of using prohibited methods in an armed conflict and murder. According to the Russian investigation, on April 12, 2022, in Mariupol, two servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation were taken prisoner. Within a few days they were transferred to the checkpoint 'Aztec' occupied by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The prisoners were held under guard in a basement room in handcuffs, with their eyes blindfolded. On April 15, 2022, Kirkalov, with the call sign "Fritz, arrived at the designated checkpoint "Aztec" with a group of Ukrainian servicemen, entered the basement, led one of them out in handcuffs and with his eyes tied, and took him outside, where he shot him in the back of the head at least three times from a pistol. On September 18, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Alexey Kyrkalov guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment in a high-security penal colony. December 11, 2024, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left the sentence unchanged.
