Case Description

In Mariupol, in the occupied part of the Donetsk region, at the plant named after" Ukrainian citizens, tank platoon commander Alexey Kovalev, as well as his comrades - gunner-operator Andrey Chumak and mechanic-driver Valeriy Fedorovich - were captured by Russian military no later than April 2022. They were accused of cruel treatment of the civilian population, attempted murder of peaceful civilians motivated by political and ideological hatred, as well as deliberate damage to someone else's property by a dangerous method. According to the investigation, in March and April 2022, Koval, Chumak, and Fedorovich patrolled the streets of Mariupol as part of a tank crew. Following the order of Commander Kovaly, Fedorovich positioned the tank, and the gunner Chumak fired six shots at the administrative building on Kuindzhi Street and residential buildings. The investigation claims that the defendants 'planned to kill peaceful citizens or force them to leave their homes in order to equip fire positions in the vacated buildings.'", As a result of the shelling, the houses were severely damaged and became uninhabitable. On November 7, 2023, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Alexey Kovalev, Andrey Chumak, and Valeriy Fedorovich guilty and sentenced each of them to 26 years of imprisonment in a strict regime colony. There is no information about appealing the verdict. On October 18, 2024, Alexey Kovaly was released during the next exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
