Case Description
On May 18, 2022, in Mariupol, occupied Donetsk region, a 40-year-old Ukrainian citizen, Alexey Korol, a machine gunner of the fire support platoon of the separate special purpose unit 'Azov' of the National Guard of Ukraine, was captured by Russian military forces. A criminal case was opened against him for cruel treatment of the civilian population in the occupied territory and the murder of two or more persons committed by an organized group, on the grounds of political, ideological hatred. According to the Russian investigation, on March 14, 2022, Korol, while near a house on 130th Taganrog Division Street in Mariupol, discovered a civilian passenger car moving along the roadway of the street, in the cabin of which there were two civilians. After the report from the platoon commander of fire support, Korol received an order to stop the vehicle. The serviceman shot at a car in which two civilian men were traveling. It is claimed that they died on the spot from their injuries. On June 21, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Alexey Korol guilty and sentenced him to 27 years in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
