Case Description
In the occupied Donetsk region, Igor Gorskiy, Andrey Shcherbynin, and Alexey Izotov were detained on charges of mercenary activity no later than January 2024. According to the Russian investigation, Shcherbini and Izotov recruited Gorbsky, a resident of Krasnodar, into the Azov battalion as a mercenary in one of the social networks. As a serviceman of a nationalist formation, Gorsky received a salary, underwent training in the use of firearms, and participated in combat operations conducted by the armed forces of Ukraine against the armed forces of the DNR, for which he received material compensation. On May 8, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found the defendants guilty and sentenced Igor Gorsky to 15 years in prison to be served in a strict regime penal colony with confiscation of property worth 1.4 million rubles, Andrey Shcherbinyin to 14 years in prison, and Alexey Izotov to 17 years in prison to be served in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
