Case Description
On January 11, 2024, in Buryatia, FSB officers came to search the dormitory room of 20-year-old Alexey Badmaev. criminal case was opened against him for propaganda of terrorism and treason. According to law enforcement officials, the man, being an opponent of the "special military operation, spread information about recruiting new members to the "Freedom of Russia" legion on social networks, left hashtags and the letter "L" in the social network "VKontakte" in Buryat and military publics, and numerous comments supporting Ukraine with "apologies for his people." Badmaev also sent 500 rubles from his bank card to the details specified in the video "Appeal to a Russian soldier" on the YouTube channel "To Be Or" in support of the "I Want to Live" project, and also tried to transfer 35,735 rubles to the "RDK" account. The court sent the man to a pre-trial detention center. On January 29, 2025, the 2nd Eastern Military District Court found Alexey Badmaev guilty and sentenced him to 7 years in prison, with the first 2.5 years to be served in a prison, and the remaining part of the sentence in a strict regime penal colony, with deprivation of the right to administer websites on the Internet for 2 years and restriction of freedom for 1.5 years. On May 13, 2025, the Appellate Military Court toughened the sentence, increasing the term of punishment to 14 years in a strict regime.
