In July 2023 (the exact date is unknown) in the Kursk region, three sons of Lipetsk priest Igor Ascheulov - Alexei, Ioann, and Timofey - were detained while attempting to illegally cross the state border between Russia and Ukraine. They were accused of attempted state treason, attempted illegal crossing of the state border of the Russian Federation by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, and attempted participation in the activities of an organization recognized as terrorist under the legislation of the Russian Federation. According to the investigation, the brothers wanted to fight on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The court sent them to the SIZO. In 2014, the guardianship authorities tried to take away nine children of Lipetsk priest Igor Ascheulov, but the court sided with the parents and the children were returned to the family. Judge Timur Zhidkov of the 2nd Western Military Circuit Court found the Ascheulov brothers guilty on July 3, 2024, and sentenced Ion to 17 years and 6 months in prison, Alexei to 17 years in prison, and Timofey to 17 years as well. The brothers will spend the first three years in prison, the remaining part of the sentence - in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
