Case Description
Alexander Shiplyuk, 55-year-old director of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was detained in Novosibirsk in early August 2022 on charges of state treason. According to the security forces, during a scientific conference in China in 2017, he passed on certain secret documents. Shiplyuk himself insists that the information in question is publicly available. The court placed him in custody. After that, Shiplyuk was escorted to Moscow, to the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center. On September 3, 2024, the Moscow City Court found Alexander Shiplyuk guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in a strict regime penal colony. The court also imposed a fine of 500 thousand rubles and 1.5 years of restriction of freedom after his release. On December 9, 2024, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left the verdict unchanged.
