Case Description
In Mariupol, the occupied part of the Donetsk region, in April 2022, during the fighting for the city, a 29-year-old citizen of Ukraine, a soldier of the Azov regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Shalyn, was taken prisoner by Russian soldiers. For a long time he was listed as missing, nothing was known about his fate. A criminal case was opened against Shalina on charges of participating in a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of terrorism. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Azov regiment, recognized in Russia as a terrorist organization. On July 10, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found Alexander Shalina guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime penal colony.
