Case Description
On March 14, 2023, in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region, Russian security forces kidnapped a local 34-year-old resident, a citizen of Ukraine, an employee of the energy repair unit of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, Oleksandr Matyukhin, right at his workplace. For almost two years, nothing was known about him; he was listed as missing. However, it later became known that a criminal case for espionage had been opened against Matyukhin. According to the Russian investigation, from July 2022 to March 2023, Matyukhin collected and passed on to his brother, who is a platoon commander of artillery reconnaissance in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, information about the locations of equipment and units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the Zaporizhzhia region." "Data transmitted could have been used to carry out fire strikes on the locations of Russian military personnel. The Ukrainian was escorted to Moscow, where on June 7, 2023, the Lefortovo District Court chose a measure of restraint for him in the form of detention. September 18, 2024, the Zaporizhzhia Regional Court found Alexander Matyukhin guilty and sentenced him to 13 years of imprisonment to be served in a strict regime correctional colony. January 14, 2024, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction credited the time Matyukhin spent in pre-trial detention, otherwise leaving the sentence unchanged.
