Case Description
Russian security forces abducted a 72-year-old local resident, pensioner, and Ukrainian citizen with forced Russian citizenship, Oleksandr Markov, from his home in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region on May 8, 2024. For almost a year, until March 2025, the family knew nothing about his fate. It was only in spring 2025 that it became known that the pensioner had been accused of treason. According to the Russian investigation, from October 2023 to May 2024, Markov used a mobile application to transfer money 16 times, totaling 15.5 thousand. hryvnias (more than 37 thousand. rubles) to accounts that were used by Ukrainian special services. The funds were intended for financial support of Ukrainian armed formations. No later than 19 February 2025, the Zaporizhzhia Regional Court found Oleksandr Markov guilty and sentenced him to 14 years in a strict regime penal colony with a one-year restriction of liberty. There is no information about the appeal. On June 26, 2025, Alexander Markov died during transportation to the city of Ust-Labinsk in the Krasnodar Territory. Reason for his death is unknown.
