Case Description
In May 2022, in the occupied Mariupol, Donetsk region, when leaving the besieged Azovstal plant, Alexander Maksimchuk, a 27-year-old citizen of Ukraine from the Nikolaev region, a junior sergeant of the Azov special purpose unit, fell into the hands of Russian soldiers." At first, he was held in the former Volnovakha Colony No. 120 in Yelenovka, where a filtration camp was set up at the beginning of the war. On the night of July 29, 2022, Maksimchuk was wounded as a result of an explosion in an industrial zone. At least 48 prisoners of war died then. In the fall of 2022, the Ukrainian was transferred to the pre-trial detention center-2 in Taganrog. Later, Maksymchuk spoke about the torture used in the detention center: "All conceivable and inconceivable methods of pressure were used against me. <...> I was subjected to torture twice, beaten, and also subjected to moral and psychological impact using special means, namely, stun guns. 5. 'All of this was done to make me recognize the 'Azov' association as a terrorist organization,' says Maksimchuk. Maximchuk was ultimately accused of "participating in a terrorist community" and "undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities." Service in the 'Azov' regiment became the reason for the criminal prosecution of a Ukrainian. On December 4, 2024, the Southern Military Court found Alexander Maksimchuk guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
