Case Description

On October 23, 2024, during hostilities in the Kursk region, Ukrainian citizens and servicemen of the 211th separate special battalion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces - 34-year-old Oleksandr Zagrablennyi, 54-year-old Andrii Bakalov, and 39-year-old Oleksandr Hryhoriev - were taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. Criminal cases were initiated against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, in October and November 2024, Zagrablennyi, Hryhoriev, Bakalov, Petrechenko, Grabina, and Rukavitsa, armed with automatic weapons, machine guns, and grenades, on infantry fighting vehicles "Kozak" as part of Ukrainian Armed Forces units, illegally invaded the territory of the Russian Federation. While in the Glukhkovsky and Sudzhansky districts of the Kursk region, the servicemen "under threat of using weapons, prevented the evacuation of the civilian population, repeatedly opened fire on Russian servicemen and local residents, and also participated in blocking and holding under illegal armed control the settlement of Novy Put and the village of Pogrebki." On June 26, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Oleksandr Zagrablennyi and Oleksandr Hryhoriev to 15 years and Andrii Bakalov to 16 years of imprisonment. The first 3 years they will spend in prison, the remaining years in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
