Case Description

A series of searches were conducted in Kazan on August 17 and September 9, 2022, in connection with a case of public justification of terrorism. The case was opened due to a video titled 'Paint and a booth for the Russian ambassador to Poland,' published on the YouTube channel 'Ob'yektiv-TV.' Raids were conducted in August at the homes of at least nine residents of Kazan - journalists who collaborated with the publication "Idel.Realii" and "Radio Azatliq", as well as their relatives. On November 18, the Sovetsky District Court of Kazan issued an in absentia arrest warrant for Idel.Realii journalist Andrei Grigoryev as a suspect in the case. On December 1, searches were conducted in the apartments of journalist Naila Mullayeva and activist Elina Yasunova as part of the same case. The video 'Paint and a booth for the Russian ambassador to Poland' contains a video recording of an incident that occurred on May 9 with the Russian ambassador to Russia, Sergey Andreev. Then protesters against the military actions in Ukraine splashed red paint on the ambassador. The video also includes footage from protest actions outside the Russian embassy in Warsaw, along with accompanying commentary. IN LATE MAY 2023, IN KAZAN, LOCAL ACTIVIST ZULFIYA SITDIKOVA WAS DETAINED WITH A POSTER THAT SAID "9 WAYA. Shortly afterwards, she was released from the police station without a report. She did not hold a picket. On July 18, it became known that following that detention, a criminal case was opened against Sitdikova for repeated discrediting of the army: the posters formed the basis of one of the episodes of the case, and the second episode arose due to the inscription "No to war" at the Eternal Flame in Kazan's Victory Park. Activist's home was searched, she was questioned as a suspect and released. Earlier, in July 2022, the Novo-Savinovsky District Court of Kazan fined Sitdikova 40,000 rubles under an administrative article on discrediting the army because she came to a Gazmanov concert in a sweater with the inscription 'No war.' On May 7, 2024, the jury at the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tatarstan found Zulfiya Sitdikova guilty and undeserving of leniency. On May 28, Judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tatarstan Ilshat Tukhvatullin sentenced Sitdikova to two years of probation with a probationary period of four years and six months of correctional labor. For the first two years, the court prohibited the activist from engaging in activities related to the public dissemination of information about the activities of the Russian army. The court ordered the "9 waya" poster to be destroyed. 13 August 2024, the Fourth Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left the verdict in force.
