Case Description

In Obninsk at the end of February 2025, 28-year-old local resident Zakhar Petukhov was detained. He was accused of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army. The reason for the criminal prosecution was Petukhov's message in December 2024 in the house chat that Russian military personnel committed a mass murder of civilians in the city of Bucha using firearms. According to the investigation, with his actions, Petukhov "misled the participants of the courtyard chat regarding the legality of the actions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation during the special military operation, as well as "undermined the authority and discredited the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the eyes of society, causing citizens to feel anxiety, fear, worry, and insecurity on the part of the state. The man was placed under house arrest for the duration of the investigation. On May 27, 2025, the Obninsk City Court of Kaluga Oblast found Zakhar Petukhov guilty and sentenced him to 2 years of compulsory labor with a 10% deduction from his wages to the state. On August 1, 2025, the Kaluga Regional Court left the sentence unchanged.
