Case Description
In July 2021, Yuriy Zaytsev, a 53-year-old local resident, was detained in Moscow. He was accused of inciting hatred or enmity. According to the investigation, Zaytsev left a comment on a video showing a security officer kicking a woman in the stomach during a protest dispersal in St. Petersburg on January 23, 2021. It is unknown exactly what the man wrote. The Presnensky District Court of Moscow sent the defendant to a pre-trial detention center. On May 6, 2022, the Presnensky District Court of Moscow found Yuriy Zaytsev guilty, but the size of the punishment is unknown. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. In December 2022, a second criminal case was opened against Zaytsev: he was again accused of inciting hatred or enmity, as well as of calling for extremism. Details of the charges are unknown. On December 8, 2022, the Presnensky District Court of Moscow sent the defendant into custody. On March 13, 2023, Yuriy Zaytsev was found guilty and, by the aggregate of sentences, was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment in a general regime colony. On October 12, 2023, the Moscow City Court left the verdict unchanged.
