Case Description
On November 19, 2024, in the Kursk region during hostilities, Ukrainian citizens, soldiers of military unit A-3283 (17th separate tank brigade), grenade launcher Maksim Starinets and assistant grenade launcher Yuriy Sinkievich were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. Criminal cases were initiated against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, causing significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, in November 2024, Starinets and Sinkievich, armed with AK-74 assault rifles and grenades, as part of a Ukrainian unit illegally invaded the territory of the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region. In the area of Olgovka village of the Korenevsky district, they equipped observation and fire positions and "opened fire on Russian military personnel and civilians, preventing their evacuation." On July 7, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Yuriy Sinkievich to 15.5 years and Maksim Starinets to 15 years of imprisonment. Both will serve the first 4 years in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into force.
