Case Description

On April 2, 2023, an explosion occurred in the premises of a cafe in the center of St. Petersburg. As a result of this, military Z-correspondent Maksim Fomin, known by the pseudonym Vladlen Tatarsky, was killed." In addition, more than 50 people received injuries of varying severity. The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under the article on murder committed by a generally dangerous method. The next day, on April 3, Daria Trepova, a resident of St. Petersburg, was detained on suspicion of murdering Tatarsky. At the time of her detention, she was in the apartment of her husband's acquaintance, Dmitry Kasintsev. Kasintsev was also detained. Also on this day, the charge was reclassified as a terrorist attack committed by a group of persons resulting in the death of a person. On April 4, Daria was placed in custody. In addition to the charge of terrorism, she was also charged with illegal trafficking of explosive devices and document forgery. According to the FSB's version, the explosive device was placed in a figurine (bust) that was given to Tatarsky by a girl shortly before the explosion, who, according to eyewitness reports, introduced herself as an artist named Nastya. The investigation claims that the planning and organization of the crime committed was carried out from the territory of Ukraine. At the same time, Daria Trepo, who holds opposition views, is a supporter of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. After Daria's arrest and interrogation, investigators from the Investigation Department for Military Crimes, Genocide, and the Rehabilitation of Nazism of the Investigative Committee of Russia named the masterminds behind the murder of Tatarsky: according to law enforcement, Daria Trepor received instructions related to the preparation of the crime through social networks and messengers from one of the leaders of the banned in Russia and liquidated National Bolshevik Party, journalist, former editor of the "MBKh Media" founded by Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Roman Popkov. Then another suspect, a former security guard and bodybuilder, Ukrainian citizen Yuri Denisov, who arrived in Russia by car, passed a bust with an explosive device to the girl through an intermediary, and then flew abroad." Trepova, after removing the safety device from the VCA, brought it to a St. Petersburg cafe. The investigation does not specify exactly how the bomb was detonated. But it is known for certain that the bomb detonated at the moment when Vladlen Tatarsky was between the girl and the IED, effectively shielding her from the blast wave. Unlike most other visitors who suffered mine-explosive injuries and concussions, the explosion only stunned Trepov. At the initiative of the Investigative Committee, Popkov has been placed on the wanted list. He was charged in absentia with leading the commission of a terrorist act. On April 13, Kasintsev, in whose apartment Trepova was detained, was placed under house arrest. He was accused of 'failure to report a crime.' "On January 25, 2024, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Daria Trepova and Dmitry Kasintsev guilty and sentenced Trepova to 27 years in a general regime colony with a fine of 600,000 rubles. Dmitry Kasintsev was sentenced to 1 year and 9 months in a general regime colony. On May 20, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict.
