Case Description
In the city of Armyansk in annexed Crimea at the end of September 2023, while attempting to cross the border "bypassing established checkpoints, a 22-year-old resident of Krasnodar, Yaroslav Sukhanov, was detained. He was accused of attempted treason. According to the security forces, the young man intended to get to the territory of the Kherson region in order to participate in hostilities on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During the interrogation, the young man said that his desire to switch to the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine arose after "studying opposition movements. He tried to reach the border zone on foot, after which he planned to surrender to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the territory of the Kherson region in order to "engage in the liberation of Ukrainian land." 6 June 2024, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea found Yaroslav Suhanov guilty and sentenced him to 6 years and 6 months of imprisonment to be served in a strict regime correctional colony. The court also fined the resident of Krasnodar 150 thousand. rubles and a one-year restriction of freedom after serving the prison sentence. July 24, 2024, the Third Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left the sentence unchanged.
