Case Description
12 July 2023, a criminal case for justifying terrorism was initiated against 36-year-old fisherman Yaroslav Levchenko in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. According to the security forces, being part of the crew of a fishing vessel, Levchenko "repeatedly propagandized among his colleagues the need for a violent change in the constitutional order, publicly expressed clear support for the armed forces of Ukraine and approved the death of Russian military personnel during the SVO." On July 13, 2024, the sailor was detained. After the search, the man allegedly had smoothbore, rifled and combat cold weapons, cartridges, gunpowder and foreign-made military equipment confiscated from him. According to relatives, the man had kept the military equipment "since his paintball hobby, and also used it for hunting. According to the family, Levchenko has a permit for smoothbore and rifled weapons. Levchenko's relatives said that his colleague informed on the man, thus trying to avoid his own criminal liability - earlier one of the crew members had a drunken rampage on the ship. Levchenko broke up a drunken fight between crew members on a ship in early June 2024, as a result of which one of them hit Levchenko on the head with a bottle. The sailor was taken to the intensive care unit with severe bleeding. After his recovery, he quit his job and wrote a statement against his colleague, and soon learned that a criminal case had been initiated against him. The reason for initiating a criminal case was a denunciation from a man who hit Yaroslav on the head. On July 15, 2023, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky City Court of Kamchatka Krai chose Levchenko's measure of restraint in the form of detention. In January 2024, the sailor was released from custody. On November 7, 2024, the Pacific Fleet Military Court found Yaroslav Levchenko guilty and sentenced him to two years in a penal colony-settlement. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
