Case Description
In September 2024, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced a search for military analyst and commentator of "Popular Politics" Yan Matveev in Pskov. It is unknown under which article of the Criminal Code the analyst is being sought. Most likely, a criminal case was opened against him for failure to fulfill the duties of a foreign agent. Ministry of Justice declared Matveev a "foreign agent" in May 2023 for "openly supporting Ukraine, equating the Russian Federation with Nazi Germany, as well as for "forming a negative attitude towards military service." Thereafter, in December and March 2023, a court in the Pskov region twice fined Matveev for refusing to mark posts with the "foreign agent" label. Mateyev himself does not live in Russia. He was put on the wanted list. On September 9, 2024, the Pushkinsky District Court of the Pskov Region, at the request of the investigator of the Bezhanitsky Interdistrict Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Pskov Region, chose a measure of restraint for Matveev in the form of detention for a period of 2 months from the moment of actual detention on the territory of the Russian Federation, or from the moment of his crossing the state border of the Russian Federation in the event of his extradition to the territory of the Russian Federation."
