Case Description
In Moscow in August 2023, Viktor Samusev, a Mosgortrans driver, was detained. He was accused of publicly justifying terrorism. According to the investigation, Samusev "expressed sympathies" for the Ukrainian nationalist regiment "Azov" and "called for the killing of the President of Russia. On August 29, 2023, the Chertanovo District Court of Moscow placed Samusev in custody. In April 2024, the case was reclassified as 'fakes' about the Russian army motivated by political hatred. According to law enforcement, the reason was a post on VKontakte in which Samusev accused Putin and the Russian army of killing civilians in Ukraine. In the publication, Samusev called the Russian army 'barbaric' and 'cruel,' capable of 'doing such terrible things as shooting peaceful unarmed civilians, torture, looting, anything at all.' "The post also mentioned the crimes of Russian soldiers in Bucha and spoke of Vladimir Putin's 'punitive regime'. The degree of guilt of each individual occupier will probably be determined by God. I see only one thing, that in Russia the people are under occupation! The people of Russia are not free! Power to the people does not exist! ... For many years now, Putin's regime has been destroying its own people, Putin is committing genocide against Russians... This punitive regime in Russia operates through fear, the Muscovite wrote. On September 3, 2024, the Chertanovo District Court of Moscow found Viktor Samusev guilty and sentenced him to 2 years in a penal colony-settlement. The court, at the request of the prosecutor, excluded the motive of political hatred from the charges and credited the time served by Samusev in the pre-trial detention center. The man was released from custody in the courtroom. Upon the entry of the verdict into force, he was placed under a travel restriction.
