Case Description
On September 1, 2021, a criminal case was initiated in Moscow for inciting hatred or enmity by an organized group against Nikolai Romanov - the excommunicated monk and former hegumen of the Yekaterinburg diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, Sergei, and his associate, press secretary Vsevolod Moguchev. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a video of a speech by the former hegumen, in which, according to the investigation, he used anti-Semitic expressions that incite hatred or enmity by an organized group against Jews, Judaists, Catholics, and Muslims. In order to record and distribute such videos, the former schema-abbot Sergei allegedly created an organized group, which included unidentified persons. On January 27, 2023, the Babushkinsky District Court of Moscow found the defendants guilty and sentenced Nikolai Romanov to 7 years of imprisonment and Vsevolod Moguchev to 5 years in a general regime colony. September 7, 2023, the Moscow City Court upheld the verdict.
