Case Description
In Smolensk, at the beginning of April 2022, local 37-year-old entrepreneur Vladimir Zavyalov was detained. He was accused of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army. According to law enforcement's version, Zav'yalov printed anti-war leaflets and placed them in place of price tags on products in one of the Karusel stores. On April 5, 2022, the court placed Zavialov under house arrest. Later, in May 2022, the charges were toughened - a motive of political hatred or enmity was added. In October 2022, Vladimir managed to leave Russia, and a few days later he was arrested in absentia. March 5, 2025, the Zadneprovsky District Court of Smolensk found Vladimir Zavyalov guilty and sentenced him in absentia to five years in a general regime colony. Also, the court prohibited the man from using the internet for three years.
