Case Description

On March 2, 2022, in St. Petersburg, a search was conducted at the home of Vladimir Volokhonksy, a deputy of the St. Petersburg municipal district "Kupchino, as part of a case involving a false report of mining. After that, Volokhonksy left Russia. On October 20, 2023, the Main Investigative Directorate of St. Petersburg initiated a criminal case against Volokhonksy under three articles simultaneously—for spreading "fakes" about the Russian army, repeated "discrediting" of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and public "justification" of terrorism. It is unknown what became the reason for the criminal prosecution. Not long before leaving, Volokhonksy spoke out against Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine at one of the meetings of the deputies of the municipal council. On December 8, 2023, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced a search for Volokhonksy. In March 2024, the Oktyabrsky District Court of St. Petersburg placed Volokhonksy under house arrest in absentia.
