Case Description
In October 2022, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in Moscow opened a criminal case against human rights defender and founder of the Gulagu.net project, Vladimir Osechkin, on charges of spreading 'fakes' about the Russian army. The reason for the criminal prosecution was: a stream from March 8, 2022 on the YouTube channel of his Gulagu.net project "The War in Ukraine and the latest events in Russia and the world." An insider from intelligence sources. Prospects.."; a stream on the YouTube channel of Ukrainian journalist Tatyana Popova on March 11, 2022 "The 16th day of the war with @MrGulagunet" and a speech on the Ukrainian YouTube channel Freedom.Live on November 20, 2022 "Putin is exterminating the population of two countries at once, — Osechkin. According to law enforcement, in the video Osechkin publicly disseminated knowingly false information about the activities of Russian military personnel during the "special military operation" in Ukraine. Vladimir Osechkin left Russia after searches in 2015 and now lives in France. On March 21, 2024, the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow issued an arrest warrant for Osechkin in absentia. On February 28, 2025, the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow found Vladimir Osechkin guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 8 years in prison to be served in a general regime correctional colony.
