Case Description
Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case against the First Deputy Prime Minister and former Prosecutor General of Ukraine Vitaliy Yarema no later than December 2022. He was accused of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army and aiding terrorism. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia put him on the wanted list. According to law enforcement officers, Yarema "made criminal decisions to start the so-called ATO in the DNR and LNR. The details of the charges are unknown. In December 2023, the accused in the case was charged in absentia. 27 May 2024, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Vitaly Yarema guilty and, by partially combining sentences, sentenced him to 19 years in prison, of which the first 3 years Yarema must spend in prison, and the remaining 16 years - in a strict regime colony. Additionally, the court imposed a fine of 400 thousand. rubles and deprived him of the right to administer websites and channels for 3 years. The court ruled that the term of serving the sentence should be calculated from the moment of his detention or extradition to Russia. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
