Case Description
The parents of five children from the city of Cherepovets in the Vologda region, Vitaly Torochkov and Polina Roots, were detained in September 2022 on suspicion of publicly justifying terrorism. Chelyabinsk City Court chose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest for both. According to the investigation, Torochkov in February 2022 published a video titled "Russian Passport - Shame and Stigma!" on VK and Telegram, in which the young man burned his passport and said, among other things, Death to Putin. Thus, he "made public calls for the implementation of terrorist activity." "The investigation also claims that Torochkov made an improvised explosive device, which he kept in Roots' apartment with her knowledge." "What messages are being attributed to Roots is unknown, but she, like her husband, actively spoke out on social networks against the invasion of Ukraine. On June 8, 2023, Judge Sergey Krivosheev of the 2nd Western Military District Court sentenced Vitaly Torochkov to 13 years in a strict regime colony, and Polina Roots to 9 years in a general regime colony. October 26, 2023, the Appellate Military Court upheld the sentence.
