Case Description
In early August 2024, 28-year-old local resident Vitaly Ignatov was detained in St. Petersburg. A criminal case was initiated against him on charges of vandalism. According to law enforcement, on July 31, 2024, the young man painted pacifist graffiti on the wall of a pedestrian tunnel leading to the "Ploshchad Pobedy" metro station and made a statement "insulting the president." The police detained the man after a call from a local resident. During a search of the Petersburg resident's apartment, 6 spray paint cans and clothing stained with paint were allegedly found. The defendant was placed under a written undertaking not to leave during the investigation. On October 3, 2024, the St. Petersburg Municipal Court Judge of Court No. 19 found Vitaly Ignatov guilty and sentenced him to 1 year of restriction of liberty. The court prohibited Ignatov from leaving his place of permanent residence from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, traveling outside St. Petersburg, visiting places where mass events are held and participating in such events, and changing his place of residence without the consent of a specialized state body overseeing the serving of sentences in the form of restriction of liberty. The sentence was not appealed and entered into legal force.
